My latest body of work Undulatus reveals the uniquely sublime nature of the ecstatic moment in natural world. The ecstatic moment is a state of perception wherein one experiences reality, if only for a moment, as a sweeping and layered composition. The resulting existential vertigo is often attributed to a spiritual experience or referred to as a religious vision. My latest paintings relate to an ongoing series of photos taken by myself and my wife since 2009, at moments of such ecstatic vision. From those photographs I have produced the oil paintings that constitute Undulatus.
This series endeavors to authentically convey the indescribable awe and complexity of the natural world from the vantage of a heightened state of consciousness. These works are moments and places where the veil of mundanity is momentarily lifted, allowing the viewer to glimpse the churning, roiling dance of the living cosmos beneath.
In order to effectively communicate that undulating quality I have turned to the principles of automatism or unconscious mark-making. The organic forms conjured by the subconscious while in a painterly 'flow state' come from the same place that ecstatic visions do. Both experiences generate overwhelmingly dense patterns of movement, whether visual or psychological. With this method I am able to create from the source.
